BitBox02 Guide

Where can I find my BitBox02 xPub?

A guide for finding the extended public key of your Bitcoin account in the BitBoxApp.

The extended public key, or xPub, describes your Bitcoin account. Bitsurance uses it to assign the addresses and balances you want to insure. Private keys or seed words are never transferred.

The BitBoxApp shows the extended public key for each Bitcoin account in the account information screen. Depending on the address type, the key may be shown as zpub, ypub, or xpub. Many services use xPub as a general term for all extended public keys.

Show the xPub in the BitBoxApp

  1. Open the BitBoxApp and unlock your BitBox02.
  2. Select the Bitcoin account you want to insure with Bitsurance.
  3. In the account view, click Account info in the top-right corner.
  4. In the Account information window, find Extended public key.
  5. Copy the displayed extended public key with Copy or the copy icon.
  6. Paste the copied key into the xPub field in the Bitsurance registration flow.

If another format is displayed

For Native SegWit accounts, the BitBoxApp typically shows a zpub. This is the correct key for modern Bitcoin addresses that start with bc1q. If another app explicitly requires a different format, you can switch between the available formats in the account information screen.

For Bitsurance, the important part is that the key belongs to exactly the Bitcoin account whose coins you want to insure. Do not use a Taproot account, because Taproot addresses are currently not supported in the Bitsurance registration flow.

Important: Never share your recovery words, seed phrase, or private keys. An extended public key cannot spend coins, but it can reveal addresses and transactions for this account. Treat it as sensitive information.
